Remembering Chaim Merom
1910-1958
Chaim Merom was born in Lithuania on 19 September 1910 and died in a car accident on 30 March 1958. Chaim was a lecturer in Zoology at the University Institute of Natural Sciences that was established in 1953, later (in 1956) to become Tel Aviv University. He was among the founders of the Department of Zoology, together with Heinrich Mendelssohn, whom he had joined earlier at the Biological-Pedagogical Institute of Yehoshua Margolin.
Chaim showed a wide interest in all aspects of Zoology, but his greatest love was for birds. He followed them around the country, studying their ecology and behavior. He edited a book on birds based on a Swiss original; his own “Tsiporei Eretz Israel” appeared only posthumously, in 1960. He was a lecturer in Vertebrate Zoology and Comparative Anatomy for second-year students, and also taught several courses in faunistics and ornithology. Chaim was an excellent and dedicated teacher, devoted to his students and sparing no effort in helping them to reach a deep understanding of Biology.
